U.S. Representative Colleen Hanabusa (HI-01) released the following statement after South Korean President Park Geun-Hye addressed a joint session of Congress:

"I would like to thank President Park Geun-Hye for taking the time to speak to us today. The story surrounding her rise to power as South Korea's first female President is compelling, and it was an honor to welcome her to the House chamber.

"I was pleased to hear President Park acknowledge the importance of a strong alliance between the United States and the Republic of Korea, a relationship deeply-rooted in our shared history on the battlefields of the Korean War. Our partnership with South Korea is a major cornerstone to the Asia-Pacific rebalance. As North Korean belligerence continues to grow, both President Park and President Obama have made it clear that we will neither tolerate Kim Jong Un's threats nor engage with his government until they demonstrate their willingness to act as a responsible member of the international community. Within this strategy, we must also continue to develop and strengthen our defense capabilities, like the ongoing ballistic missile defense testing at Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai. We must prepare for every scenario, and ensure we do all we can to protect our nation and our allies.

"Another major theme of President Park's speech was "happiness,' or what I call, "public confidence.' The success of a nation's people plays a critical role in the nation's economic growth and stability. Our business agreements with the Republic of Korea have resulted in shared prosperity and much needed jobs, and I look forward to expanding this strong bond between our countries moving forward."
